The Parsi dilemma: dwindling community faces questions of identity and orthodoxy
Article Abstract:
The Parsi community that has been one of the centers of Bombay for over 3,000 years is dwindling in number and in faith. The Parsis were the first to worship a single supreme being and have had a long history as community leaders and benefactors. The community, once 150,000 strong, has dwindled to 60,000 as many of the younger generation leave the country or marry outside the community. Reform of the patriarchal system is being debated, but drastic change is unlikely.
