Article Abstract:
Luc Vandevelde has taken on the role of executive chairman at Marks and Spencer (M and S), and he is likely to introduce changes to the company's board. he aims to develop the M and D brand and offer brand communities on the internet, and extend the company's financial service operations. He is also interested in international deals and this could change the character of the company. There are questions as to whether international expansion is wise for M and S, which needs to assess the appeal of its new ranges.

Food for thought
Article Abstract:
Marks and Spencer faces structural problems which include a weak food division that could cause difficulties for the clothing retailing side. Volumes sales of clothing dropped in fall and winter 1998, and the company is devolving power over buying decisions. Overseas suppliers are also being used, to cut costs. The company had sought to expand its clothing side because the food side had not performed well. The food division could be sold, or the space used for food could be reduced.
