MasterCard aims to block major rival, American Express, in Asia distribution
Article Abstract:
MasterCard International is blocking the attempts of rival American Express to expand in Asia. MasterCard's Asia-Pacific board has issued a resolution that indirectly warned its member financial institutions not to do business with American Express if they want to retain their MasterCard franchises. American Express says that it will do everything to fight the move. American Express is the least successful in Asia among the three biggest US credit card companies. It holds only 7.5% of the market, while Visa and MasterCard have market shares of 35.9% and 36.8%, respectively.
