Tan Sri Rashid runs into hurdles
Article Abstract:
RHB Group, the financial conglomerate run by Malaysian banker Tan Sri Rashid, may not be able to push through with its expansion plans because of problems that have to do with failing investment in Indonesia's PT Bank Niaga. The deepening Southeast Asian financial crisis is also partly to blame for RHB's problems as the worsening earnings debacles of companies squeeze credit further. Meanwhile, Tan Sri Rashid's capability to expedite deals through his connections may suffer as his brokerage house releases bad reports on Malaysian companies affected by the Asian financial crisis.

Central Bank predicts a soft landing for Malaysia, with growth easing to 8.3%
Article Abstract:
Bank Negara, Malaysia's central bank, has reported that the country will grow by around 8.3% in 1996, which is consistent with the strong growth trends that have been achieved since 1987. Furthermore, the manufacturing and construction industries are forecasted to continue to expand in double-digit terms. Such rapid economic gains, however, are not without their disadvantages. One of these is the growing current-account deficit.
