Mayhem and the spice islands
Article Abstract:
The Molucca islands, Indonesia, have been affected by violence which has led to the deaths of some 400 people in a week. The violence is between Muslims and Christians, and a Hindu may be appointed to be military commander for the islands. Muslims account for 90% of Indonesia's population, though there are roughly equal numbers of Christians on the Molucca islands. The Christians fear the immigration will leave them as a minority. Elsewhere in Indonesia there are demands for independence which have also led to violence.

Indonesia in travail
Article Abstract:
Killings in the Moluccan islands pose a threat to democracy in Indonesia, though there have been moves to allow greater autonomy to some regions in Indonesia. President Abdurrahman Wahid was chosen as a unifying influence, and there have been calls on him to end the violence. The armed forces have helped to contribute to the problem, due to their brutality and venality. The president is seeking to impose civilian control on the armed forces, and has to act decisively as their head.
