Measured privatisation progress in Brazil
Article Abstract:
Expansion of the privatisation process into strategic areas in Brazil, such as public utilities has been hampered by administrative difficulties, judicial interference and opposition in Congress. However there is a greater level of purpose on the privatisation issue at a regional level. The state assembly in Sao Paulo has voted to sell stakes in three electric utilities including CPFL. Coelba, a utility in the state of Bahia is to be sold and there will be further offers in the rail networks.

On the benefits of privatization
Article Abstract:
Studies by the Brazilian National Development Bank show that the short-term financial gains resulting from privatization are exceeded by potential efficiency gains. The two recent studies suggest that Brazilian privatizations have benefited the performance of the former state companies and have also reduced public debt. The results prove that the Brazilian government is right in proceeding with the privatization process.
