Houghton Mifflin to buy Reed Elsevier units

Houghton Mifflin Co. has bought the Harcourt Education unit of Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier PLC in a deal valued at $4 bil. The purchase involves $300 mil in shares and $3.7 bil in cash, and dramatically boosts Houghton Mifflin's position in the educational publishing market.
