Messages of war
Article Abstract:
The Colombian government is seeking to negotiate peace with the guerrillas group, FARC, but he has been criticized for allowing FARC to temporaily retain control of an area of jungle, through keeping it demilitarized. The army and political right oppose this move and the defense minister, Rodrigo Lloreda, has resigned. Meanwhile, paramilitary leader, Carlos Castana, is seeking to be involved in negotiations. The FARC has made control of paramilitary groups a condiction of talks, and the government has destroyed a paramilitary operated plant for processing cocaine. The paramilitaries have powerful connections, but may have to be dismantled if peace is to be achieved.
