Article Abstract:
The proportional area method has traditionally used for the purpose of showing compliance with Part L of the UK government's Building Regulations. However, the department of the environment has now revised its views, and believes that a procedure which takes account of the thermal bridging caused by the various metal connecting paths between inner liner and outer sheet should be used to determine the thickness of insulation necessary to meet specific thermal transmittance values for some types of insulated double-skin metal roof and wall systems.

Workplace Regs: the Directive

The Health & Safety Commission has issued proposals for implementing the EC Workplace Directivein Britain. The 'Proposals for Workplace Regulations' apply to the use of buildings and not construction sites. Issues covered include health and safety of employees working away from the building, maintenance systems, fresh air supplies and workplace temperature, lighting, interior decorations, space requirements per employee, workstations, floors, safety barriers, sanitary and rest facilities.

The Basements for Dwellings Approved Document covers single storey basements of around 70 square meters. A summary of design opportunities and constraints is provided, including structure, fire separation, compliance with the SAP energy rating method, ventilation, glazing, and hygiene.
