Businessman Michael Bloomberg's unlikely victory in New York's Nov 6, 2001, mayoral elections owes much to the fact that New York needs a particular sort of mayor following the Sep 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Bloomberg, a Republican, now faces a huge challenge in making New Yorkers feel safer.

Los Angeles, CA, mayor Richard Riordan was reelected in elections held in Apr 1997. He easily defeated his opponent, Tom Hayden, in an election in which 20% of the population voted. Hayden's usual base of support does not actually in the city limits, and the economy is doing well.
