Minor concerns
Article Abstract:
There was a growing trend in Asia away from using child labour before the region began to experience economic difficulties. However, Asian companies are now under strong pressure to reduce output costs, and this could encourage them to begin to employ children on low wages again. This problem has been recognized by the International Labour Organization, which has begun to draft a convention to abolish extreme forms of employment for those aged under 18. However, it will be hard to eliminate child labour while so many families are so poor that they need to use their children as wage earners.

Time for a makeover
Article Abstract:
Asian countries have supported a proposal to radically restructure the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) which would redirect the agency's focus to dispensing economic development advice. UNCTAD was founded in 1964 to help foster international growth and economic development but became mired in ideological debates. Asian diplomats have helped to reverse a downward spiral for UNCTAD and if approved, the organization will operate as a trade information center for emerging countries.

Discarding the veil
Article Abstract:
British Asian women are gradually become more confident of their own identity. Many are still willing to follow their parents' social codes, but others are now looking to become more independent and to determine the course of their life for themselves. They are much more aware of their rights, and are increasingly seeking to make their own decisions. Many wish to adopt a more western lifestyle, and are demanding recognition as equals. This trend will force Asian families to adapt and make compromises.
