Arthur Andersen UK Corporate Finance Group Executive Martin Thorp confirms his plans, to expand into the Far East and the US, are coming to fruition. He wants his group to further its expertise in industry. The corporate finance group has expanded to employ 150 people, by 1997, from just three at its start in 1995. The group has managed large deals, such as the purchase of Generale de Sante and the General Healthcare Group, costing some 930 million pounds sterling. Thorp has recruited people with a wide range of experience, such as in the investment and in the venture capital industries.

Telecommunications lead the way
Article Abstract:
The postal services and telecommunications sector was among the top UK acquisitions of European companies during 1996. The acquisition of a 25% stake in France's Cegatel by British Telecommunications PLC for 1.1 billion pounds sterling was among the largest. The business services sector was the most active in 1996, with 48 transactions in total, followed by wholesale distribution. One of the leading acquirers during the year was Unilever, with four deals in the food and drink sector. A sector-by-sector table of acquisition activity during 1996 is presented.
