Money grows on trees: in cashews, Vietnam finds a lucrative business
Article Abstract:
The cashew-processing business is thriving in Vietnam and has created jobs and increased export revenues. Cashew farmers have been selling their nuts to local processing companies that export the peeled product. Vietnam's 15% tax on raw-cashew exports has promoted the sale of raw cashews to domestic processing factories instead of using barter with China. Export of the processed nuts to the U.S. and other countries has become very profitable for Vietnam. The cashews face small tariffs in the U.S. and provide between 5% and 10% of the U.S. import market.

Tug on the reins
Article Abstract:
Indonesia successfully maintained its 1990 inflation level of 9.5% in 1991 by restricting economic growth. Strict economic policies included limiting foreign loans for imports, forcing banks to extend more loans to exporting companies and curbing money supply. Infrastructure continued to expand because of an overflow of foreign investments. The government plans to limit inflation to 8% in 1992 with tighter economic policies. However, some economists believe the policies will adversely affect the private sector and restrict future economic growth.

Let that be a warning: Hanoi court punishing two party dissidents
Article Abstract:
A Vietnamese judge sentenced former Communist Party Leader Do Trung Hieu and decorated war veteran Hoang Minh Chinh to jail for harming national security, although some political observers say the two are being punished for insisting on an open party. The incident is seen by sources as a warning to other dissatisfied party members in advance of a congress to be held in Jun 1996. The questioning of Communist Party policies and the calls for reform are not tolerated. The two will remain incarcerated during the party congress.
