Modelling as learning: a consultancy methodology for enhancing learning in management teams
Article Abstract:
The concept of modeling as learning is introduced as an alternative to the traditional method of business consultancy. Modeling as learning is characteristically different from the traditional consultancy method in that it recognizes the client as the owner of all analytical work done; the consultant acts as a facilitator in group decision making; and sensitive issues related to a problem are accounted for. The method aims to increase the client's knowledge of the business and hasten knowledge assimilation using conceptual frameworks, qualitative and quantitative modeling tools. Examples of modeling as learning projects are presented.

Social theory and system dynamics practice
Article Abstract:
Two new forms of systems dynamics (SD) practice are examined. The nomothetic theory is concerned with the search for universal laws using a process of identifying tangible concepts and then devising tests that measures the concepts. The ideographic form deals with accessing the unique understanding that a person employs to interpret the world around them. It is concluded that SD is grounded in functionalist sociology, that SD can be re-crafted within various paradigms and that it can bring a formal modeling approach to the agency/structure debate within social theory.

New advances in economic modelling and evaluation of environmental issues
Article Abstract:
Developments in economic environmental system modelling and environmental policy analysis are investigated. Progress in both fields reflects how they are both dynamic and involve several methodologies. More involvement of model integration combining physical, biological, spatial-interaction and market process theories is called for. Meta-analysis in connection with fuzzy multicriteria analysis and qualitative impact modelling can also aid in extending and combining results of studies characterized by uncertainty.
