Macau election points up contrast with Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
The pro-democracy movement in the Portuguese enclave of Macau is a sharp contrast to that in neighboring Hong Kong. As seen in the latest election, the last to be held under Portuguese administration before Macau reverts to Chinese control in 1999, democracy and human rights remain alien concepts to most of the territory's population. Another major distinction between Macau and Hong Kong is Portugal's willingness to accept China's political plans for the territory.
