More cracks in Mexico

The arrest of the brother of ex-president Carlos Salinas for murder and the collapse of the economy has brought Mexico's political system to the brink of crisis. Pres Ernesto Zedillo has acted decisively but it is more likely that the breakup of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party is needed.

A lesson in Mexico
Article Abstract:
Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party finally showed it was willing to open up its political process to dissenting opinions at its convention. Party leader and Pres Ernesto Zedillo seems to realize that the party must continue to commit to further political reform.

Can the PRI change its spots? Mexico
Article Abstract:
The PRI, at the urging of Pres Ernesto Zedillo, is trying to bring political reform to Mexico, a country where the same political party has ruled for 70 years. Perhaps the party's greatest opportunity for true reform will come at its Sep 1996 assembly.
