Moving targets
Article Abstract:
Western Europe has more tourists and creates more tourist revenue than any other region of the world. Typically, Europeans still prefer to take their major vacation in their home country and travel to the location by automobile. Europeans are becoming more discriminating consumers and increasingly are shunning overcrowded resorts with poor-quality facilities and service. The European Commission is considering consumer-protection proposals that will harmonize package tour conditions. The Commission's tourism policy is predicated upon encouraging tourism within the European Community (EC) by EC nationals, promoting the EC to tourists from outside the EC, and broadening the tourist market within the EC to new regions and seasons.

Sweet hospitality
Article Abstract:
The recession has forced many luxury hotels to resort to volume discounting and operational cost-cutting. The strategy is not without its risks. Luxury hotels have to measure the benefits of increased occupancy rates obtained through aggressive volume discounting against the possibility that their image of exclusivity might be tarnished. Likewise, operational cost-cutting carries the risk of possible consumer dissatisfaction about the levels of service provided by hotels.
