Murdoch's Sky Channel beams strong signal across Europe
Article Abstract:
Sky Channel, a service of Satellite Television PLC, is the first pan-European advertising and entertainment television station, broadcasting in English to countries across Europe to audiences eager to receive a wider variety of commercial programming. Satellite Television is a subsidiary of News International Ltd., which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who claims that because the public has received the channel so favorably since it first won permission to broadcast in 1982 from Eutelstat (the international administrative body created by European telecommunications authorities) any attempt by local regulators to block transmission would be shouted down. The Australian Murdoch's career in television and the outlook for Sky Channel are described.

Europe's women unite to throw off their chains
Article Abstract:
The long-term outlook for women in European management is promising, buoyed by the development of women's support networks such as Women in Management in Great Britain, the Berlin Women's Professional Network in Germany, Women in Career in Italy, and the European Women's Development Network, founded in 1984 under the sponsorship of the European Foundation for Management Development. The general picture remains poor, however, and European women still tend to find career advancement difficult. Descriptions and statistics on women in management are offered for several European countries, including Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, West Germany, Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland.

How ComputerLand Europe declared its independence
Article Abstract:
ComputerLand Europe (the European subsidiary of ComputerLand Corp. headquartered in Hayward, California) expects to be profitable again in 1986 under the guidance of Paul Helminger, the company's managing director. Helminger persuaded the parent company to locate its franchise in Luxembourg and believes that he will now be able to run his franchise in his own way due to a variety of factors such as the court judgement in March 1985 ordering ComputerLand's founder and chairman William H. Millard to give over 20 percent of the company's shares to Micro - Vest, the U.S. franchisee revolt, and, finally, the removal of Millard from his position as company chairman.
