Article Abstract:
The US is keen to ensure that China understands the strength of its resolve to act in the case of any regional threat in Asia. History shows that many large scale conflicts occurred because one nation underestimated the intentions and capabilities of another nation or group of nations. Analysts are divided on how well China understands the weakness of its own military capabilities compared with those of the US, but the US is keen to emphasize the difference to avoid any miscalculation which could bring the two nations into conflict.

The Krulak doctrine: U.S. Marine commandant wants a Pacific focus
Article Abstract:
The new commandant of the US Marine Corps is among the loudest voices in the military seeking a stronger US presence in the Pacific, not least to demonstrate committment to nervous Asian countries. In the past 20 years the US has committed most of its overseas buildup to Europe and the Atlantic, though the recent draw-down has balanced those forces. Gen Charles Krulak responded to fears voiced at the opening conference of the Asia-Pacific Center for Strategic Studies, saying US security is best served by a strong Asia.

Military trim
Article Abstract:
Technical advances in military weaponry and tactical procedures are expected to impact the number of US forces in Asian and Pacific territories. The US is making defence cuts in the region for budgetary reasons but can retain its military strength with fewer troops. The US Pacific Command will demonstrate its continued military strength in Mar. 1997. Many are concerned about the US's commitment to Asia and its future role in worldwide peace.
