Increased awareness on health consequences of food products and the changing patterns of eating behavior among consumers boosted the sales of biscuits in the European snack food market. Savoury and plain biscuits and snack/health food bars recorded large increases in sales among five European economies. The UK posted the strongest market growth in 1993 with sales reaching $2,467 million, followed by Italy with $2,341 million, while France posted very minimal growth. Germany had the largest increase in total expenditures at 56% from 1989-1993 due to the steady expansion of its biscuit industry.

The Italian market for sweet & savoury biscuits

The sweet biscuits sector dominates the Italian market for the period 1993-1997. The sector has recorded a market share of 58.4% of volume sales in 1997, with Barilla Alimentare SpA accounting for the 48.5%. However, despite having a dynamic volume growth, Italy's sweet biscuit sector experienced a drop in volume sales during the same period by 1.2%. Meanwhile, the sector is forecasted to boost in volume by 5.6% in the period to year 2002.
