My word: chief censor's remarks prompt political outcry
Article Abstract:
Indonesia Information Minister Harmoko is under attack by Muslims for supposedly insulting Islam in a performance as a shadow puppeteer. The criticism overshadowed his victory in obtaining multiyear sentences for two journalists who published news of Harmoko's illicit demands for kickbacks from media companies. Harmoko insists he simply made a mistake in the puppet play, but his error of using meaningless syllables in part of a holy prayer that he inserted in the play casts doubts on his credibility as a Muslim.

Twisting arms for alms; Suharto's scheme squeezes the rich to help the poor
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's President Suharto has issued a decree 'recommending' that affluent individuals and corporations contribute 2% of their post-tax income to a scheme that would fund a program aimed at helping poor families become entrepreneurs. Political observers suggest that the plan is aimed at positioning Suharto's Golkar party as an ally of the poor in time for May 1997 parliamentary elections. The deadline to respond to the decree was Mar 31, 1996 but the amount actually raised by the measure remains unclear.
