NEW PVT KOCHI AIRPORT READYING FOR TAKEOFF
Article Abstract:
India's first private international airport at Nedumbassery, near Kochi, in Kerala is expected to receive its first flight by December 1998. Many airlines and charter services have shown interest in taking up the landing rights at the new airport. All the service providers at the airport plan to have stakes in project. The aviation fuel supplier, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and the Federal Bank (FB) will acquire stakes in the project. The airport - CIAL - plans to serve 700,000 passengers during the first year of its operations. It also proposes to encourage the carriers operating the east-west routes to land at the airport. (ag)

AIR CARGO RATES TO BE HIKED AT MUMBAI AIRPORT
Article Abstract:
Mumbai Airport will be revising its air cargo rates with effect from June 1, 1998. Terminal, storage and processing (TSP) charges may increase by 100 percent to 1,200 percent under the new quantity-based tariff system. This will increase the cost of imports. The Airports Authority of India has revised TSP rates to Rs3.50 per kg for general import cargo and to Rs7 per kg for refrigerated cargo. TSP charges for general export cargo has been fixed at Rs0.55 per kg while special cargo will be charged Rs1.10 per kg. Newspapers and TV reel consignments will get a 50 percent concession. (khr)

GIIC TO HELP PRIVATISE AHMEDABAD AIRPORT

The Gujarat Industrial and Investment Corporation has decided to help in the privatisation of the Ahmedabad airport by searching for a partner as well as expediting the privatisation process. The Centre has decided to privatise three airports. The Babtie group of UK, an infrastructure consultancy which recently opened its India office at Ahmedabad, has shown interest in the proposal.
