NORDIC: VALIO TO TAKE PART IN CONSOLIDATION
Article Abstract:
The Finnish dairy company Valio has to take part in the future consolidation of the European dairy market, says Matti Kavetvuo, head of the company, in an interview with the paper. He says a merger with the Danish company MD Foods is possibly a more urgent alternative than a merger with Swedish Arla, as MD Foods is more export-oriented than Arla. However, at the moment, the Finnish competition legislation would not allow such a merger, as Valio's dominating position on the Finnish market would be even more strengthened. Matti Kavetvuo expects the Finnish legislation has to be eased, otherwise Valio will remain a local player and not able to compete with the European dairy giants.
