NOT NOW DARLING
Article Abstract:
The price of rubber has fallen substantially during the past few weeks, despite the rumours that the State Trading Corporation would procure more. The fall in price has been due to the unstable demand. The demand has been erratic because of a 4.3 percent fall in purchases by tyre manufacturers to 135,315 tonnes. The total demand for natural rubber grew by a negative 0.5 percent at 284,630 tonnes during April-September 1998. The price of domestic rubber was Rs26.75 per kg on January 18, 1999. The international price was Rs31.02 per kg. While the State Trading Corporation is trying to procure more natural rubber, 2 other agencies - Rubco and Rubbermark - have quit the market. The State Trading Corporation has already signed contracts to buy 1,750 tonnes of natural rubber during January 1999. Better price for natural rubber will depend on the revival of the economy.
