THIS SEASON'S LOOK IS WET COTTON
Article Abstract:
The Government of India has released a quota of 5 lakh bales of cotton for export in 1998-99. It had released a quota of 7.2 lakh bales of cotton for export in 1997-98. India exported 16.82 lakh bales of cotton in 1997-98. The actual shipment till date has been 1.7 lakh bales and the exports are likely to be 2 lakh bales only. The export quota could not be used to the full as the buyers in South-East Asian countries are facing a financial crunch. The Indian Cotton Mills' Federation feels that India has limited domestic supply and does not have exportable surplus like USA. It feels that India should increase productivity of cotton. Cotton production in this season is estimated to be 153.25 lakh bales against a record production of 177.90 lakh bales of cotton in 1997-98. The total area under cotton cultivation is 88.68 lakh hectares. The cotton production was 153.25 lakh bales with a yield of 294 kg per hectare in 1997-98. (rk)
