Najibullah offers to go
Article Abstract:
President Najibullah of Afghanistan promises he will step down if the United Nations manages to find an interim government acceptable to all sides in the 13 year civil war. Because of dissension among the mujahideen rebels, any UN sponsored government may be rejected; leaving Najibullah in power.

The civil war in Afghanistan has slowed since the US and the Soviet Union stopped sending arms to the rival factions. The mujaheddin may still receive support from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Pres Najibullah is hoping to cultivate support in the newly independent Central Asian republics also.

Najibbullah has remained in power without the backing of the former Soviet Union and in spite of the latter's breakup. He rationalizes his control as the antidote to extremism of Islamic fundamentalists who want to use Afghanistan as an international center of terrorism.
