Taiwan's unnerving president does it again
Article Abstract:
The president of Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui, has been criticised by China for changing the terms of its relationship with that country. He used a term generally take to mean 'nation state' to describe Taiwan. Taiwanese stock prices fell after China's reaction but the government announced that it had a fund to support stock prices. Elections are due to be held in Taiwan, and opponents are concerned that Lee is seeking to stay in office by postponing elections through provoking problems with China.

Taiwan's high-stakes game
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government argues that China and Taiwan are part of the same country, yet they have different governments and are effectively two countries. Taiwanese leader, Lee Teng-hui, has stated that relations between the two countries should be carried out using a state-to-state basis. This statement has led to a strong reaction from China. Taiwan has been disappointed at the low level of US support, but Chinese belligerance can increase support for the ruling Kuomintang.
