Union Pacific Resources (UPR) staged an attempted hostile takeover of rival Pennzoil. The $6.4 billion acquisition would have made a strong oil company and would have given UPR a solid brand name. Images in the energy sector are becoming increasingly important.

The Russian government is preparing to privatize more of its petroleum companies, but auctions are not expected to be much fairer than previous auctions. Rigged auctions were held in 1995 for top state-owned oil companies.
