National Geographic plans to broadcast in Thailand

National Geographic Channel Asia, a cable and satellite channel, is planning to commence broadcasting its outdoor-oriented shows in Thailand in 1999. The channel, which is a partnership between National Geographic Television of Washington and General Electric Co. subsidiary NBC, has total viewership of 8.5 million, an increase of 21% from the initial 7 million viewers during its launch in July 1998. National Geographic's largest market is India, where it reaches around 5.5 million viewers, but it also has distribution in such countries as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines.
