Nearer Norway than Scotland: the weather, isolation and a lack of skilled professionals are inspiration rather than hindrance to Richard Gibson in his Shetland practice
Article Abstract:
Richard Gibson's Shetland architectural practice operates in one of the most aggressive climates in Europe. The practice was started in 1972 and was the only one although there are now three others. Shetland has a definite tradition reflecting local skills and materials, and the climate. Winds are a constant problem and building costs are higher than on the Scottish mainland due to the cost of transport. Bergen is actually nearer than Aberdeen. The main construction technique is timber frame, which can be erected quickly and made wind and watertight. The practice undertakes new-build and conservation.
