Nestle buys Novartis nutrition unit

Nestle S.A. of Switzerland is to acquire the medical nutrition unit of Novartis AG also of Switzerland for $2.5 billion. The food manufacturer is planning on producing a line of nutritionally specific foods geared to the needs of people with illnesses (i.e. cancer, diabetes . . . ). The motivation came with the observation that as the population ages it will need special diets to treat health concerns.

French retailer Casino to boost its stake in a Brazilian grocer

Casino, Guichard-Perrachon et Cie. of France is to invest $860 million to increase its stake (to possibly as high as 41 percent) in Pao de Acucar of Brazil. The French retailer is enhancing its position in South America's biggest economy. Pao de Acucar is the largest grocery chain in Brazil.
