Smart phones lure Psion and 3 partners
Article Abstract:
Psion PLC, a UK-based hand held computer firm, has formed a joint venture with Nokia Corp., Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson and Motorola Corp. to develop a software for the new mobile telephones. The four companies will form a new joint venture firm to be called Symbian to develop a new operating system based on Psion's technology. Psion will control 40% of Symbian, while Ericsson and Nokia will each hold 30%. Meanwhile, Motorola said it will eventually invest the amount equal to that of Nokia and Ericsson, 29 million pounds sterling in Symbian. After Motorola places its investment into Symbian, Psion's stake will decrease to 31% while its three other partners will take 23% each.

Enso Timber and Schweighofer to merge in cash, stock deal

Sawmill companies, Enso Timber Ltd. and Holzindustrie Schweighofer GmbH of Austria, agreed to merge in an estimated $596.1-million deal involving cash and stocks. After the merger, Holzindutrie Schweighofer will become a subsidiary of Enso Timber and will own a 33% stake in the company. Both companies infer that they will save 85 million markkaa come 2001 due to the consolidation of their operations. According to Enso, the merger will also boost its fiber and timber market profitability in Europe because its sales and consumption base will become broader.
