New York's splintering left
Article Abstract:
There is considerable conflict within the left-wing in New York, NY. It seems likely that Republican George Pataki will be re-elected governor, and senator Al D'Amato is also regarded as having a good chance of retaining his seat. In contrast, the left-wing appears to be disintegrating. The city's social diversity once seemed to be a political strength, but is now proving a negative factor, with social causes having little broad-based appeal. Left-wing politicians must now make many small commitments, rather than a few large ones, and this confuses their message.
