New Zealand politicians scramble to claim victory

New Zealand's various political parties have sought to portray themselves victors in the country's first mixed-member proportional parliamentary general elections. New Zealand Labor Party leader Helen Clark has been proclaimed the parliament's new prime minister. Clark noted that the different parties are still negotiating to bolster their respective positions in parliament. Meanwhile, most economic and political observers believe that the Labor Party may forge an alliance with the New Zealand First party.

Winston Peters is the voters' wild card in New Zealand's new election system

New Zealand prime ministerial candidate Winston Peters is confident that he will win the Oct. 12, 1996, elections which launches the new mixed member proportional representation electoral system. Peters is running under the New Zealanders First party which he founded in 1993. The new system, which requires voters to select a political party and a local representative, promotes checks and balances and enables minor political groups to gain power.

Peters picks coalition partner
Article Abstract:
Winston Peters, head of New Zealand's populist First Party and winner of the national election held in Oct. 1996, has decided to coalesce with the National Party of Prime Min. Jim Bolger and retain the latter in his post. Peters' decision has disappointed the Labour Party which had earlier hoped to launch its leader, Helen Clark, as the country's first female prime minister.
