The Thailand government's announcement of its rescue package for the nation's beleaguered banking institutions failed to ignite investor interest in the stocks of the banks. A number of experienced market observers still rate Thailand banking stocks with a sell rating, driven in part by the inability of the Thai government to implement its policies. Some analysts are a bit optimistic that the government rescue package, which involves the nationalization of small banks and the subsidization of larger banks, may still bring life to Thailand's crawling economic activity. These analysts recommend buying the stocks of larger banks to maintain some profits on the investments.

International investors have expressed strong optimism over Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) shares, despite serious financial threats posed by the country's emerging bear markets. Although the newspaper publishing firm endured a 3.4% decline in share value, SPH remains one of the most stable investment opportunities in the country. The company recorded pretax profits of $147.7 million, while achieving a 1.1% decline in net profits for the first three months of 1998.
