New markets come of age
Article Abstract:
New issues markets, in Europe, are beginning to perform better than some of the main markets although they have yet to reach the performance levels of the Nasdaq, in the US. The introduction of the Neuer Markt is already making a difference in the German equity market. Other markets are specializing, such as Easdaq, which is used by technology based businesses. A study by 3i Venturelab called for the markets to be expanded to include a wider range of investors and for the need of greater transparency to encourage more investment. The study confirmed the general support for the new markets.

Floating around the West Midlands
Article Abstract:
Companies based in Birmingham, England, and the West Midlands are failing to take advantage of the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), probably because of the region's close economic links with manufacturing. Most flotations on the AIM, to date, have involved service industries, particularly companies linked to leisure, information technology and entertainment. Manufacturing is slow to join the AIM, but other high-tech companies are establishing themselves in the region. One such is recycling specialist Recycling Services Group, whose shares began trading on the AIM in November 1996.

Catering for enterprise? (equity markets)
Article Abstract:
The Stock Exchanges responded to criticism that young companies were effectively excluded from raising equity capital on the stock market by overhauling its listing rules. It also introduced the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) for smaller, young companies. The AIM is proving successful although it is not yet known whether it will suffer from the liquidity problems experienced by the Unlisted Securities Market (USM).
