US supermarkets have so far survived the onslaught of deep discounters such as warehouse clubs with financial reorganization, new services, improved computer systems and private-label promotion. The warehouse clubs are still expected to increase their grocery market-share.

Global food companies such as Nestle have acquired smaller European firms in order to grow in Europe's stagnant food markets. Nestle is currently awaiting approval of its acquisition of Perrier by the European Community.
