Companies around the world are adjusting conventional working hours for employees. One American employee in five works hours other than nine-to-five, Germany has seen the introduction of 24-hour insurance and banking, and large supermarkets are staying open 24 hours in the UK.

The sugar industry has dominated the economy of Negros since 1896. For decades sugar barons lived affluently while the peasants eked out a meager existence. The collapse of sugar prices in 1985, further hurt the island's economy. Unemployment was 47% in 1991.
