Norilsk takes steps to thwart takeover by Rusal

Russian metal-mining firm Norilsk Nickel has shown resistance to a $51 bil takeover bid by Russian aluminum company RUSAL. RUSAL is purchasing a 25% to 29% stake in Norilsk as an initial step toward a possible merger. A Norilsk-RUSAL merger would create one of the world's top five mining entities with a market value of up to $100 bil.

The new aluminum industrial will be the largest in the world rivaling Alcoa Inc. of the United States.
