Within the financial institutions group, the bankign sector was quiet in terms of acquisitions and mergers in November. The Italian banking sector did more another step towards consolidation with the deal between Banca Popolare di Verona an Banca Popolare di Novara Scarl. In the insurance sector, companies in the United States and Europe are estimated to have raised UKPd15 billion in equity since September. Deals in the financial institutions group in November 2001 are listed by European target or acquirer or by non-European target or acquirer.

A surprising number of mergers and acquisitions occurred in the Scandinavian financial services industry during the first three months of 1997. Danish bank Den Danske Bank paid 2.2 billion Danish Krona for Swedish commercial bank Ostgota Enskilda Bank. Nordic commercial bank Svenska Handelsbanken paid 23 billion Danish Krona for credit bank Stadshypotek. Other mergers and acquisitions details are given. Big Nordic banks are listed and compared in value.
