Austria: Fries to become major shareholder at Bohler

Claus Raidl, director of the board of stainless steel manufacturer Bohler-Uddeholm, indicated that the investment group around solicitor Rudolf Fries has plans to become the major shareholder of the manufacturer, saying that Fries could outvote OIAG at the next shareholders meeting 2002. The Fries investment group currently holds 23% of the shares, 2% less than the present major shareholder OIAG, the Austrian state holding company.

Although OIAG director Johannes Ditz says that the Austrian state holding company is not planning to sell Bohler-Uddeholm, the current affairs magazine Format reports that CVC Capital Partners of the UK and a big foreign bank are interested in taking over the Austrian-Swedish steel maker. CVC is said to be offering about EUR 618mn. OIAG holds 25% of Bohler-Uddeholm's stock.
