North America
Article Abstract:
The North American economy is likely to see slower growth in net exports and low inflation from cheap imports in 1998 as a result of the Asian crisis. US unemployment dropped to 4.7% at the end of 1997, and consumer confidence is strong. US interest rates are less likely to be raised as a result of the crisis. Political uncertainty could lead to a temporary rise in bond yields. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar has dropped to a record low level in relation to the US dollar, and Canadian interest rates were raised in Jan 1998.

The US dollar is firmer in relation to the Japanese yen and German mark, and this should help control inflation in the US. Canada saw a modest increase in output in 1st half 1996. Interest rates were reduced in Canada in Aug and Oct 1996. A growth rate of 3.5% could be achieved for 1997.
