North America
Article Abstract:
US growth figures have fallen considerably following the adoption of revised calculation methods, and the new figures indicate that the US economy is actually operating at capacity and not just above capacity as was thought previously. The US recorded a low inflation rate and moderate growth in 1995 thanks to tight monetary and fiscal policy. In the final quarter of 1995 growth slowed to a rate consistent with estimates of a sustainable growth rate. It now seems that the US economy is in greater risk of sliding into recession than accelerating growth again.

Article Abstract:
There is concern about a rise in inflation in the US due to an increase in economic growth in 1st half 1996 leading to supply constraints. Wage pressures have been reduced in the 1990s due to corporate restructuring and competition from abroad, but wage inflation could re-emerge as a problem. Canada also faces underlying pressure on prices and consumer prices are likely to rise in 2nd half 1996. Canadian interest rates have been reduced and are likely to be stable until they are raised by the end of 1996.
