Stolpe may have ended his political career by announcing his past cooperation with the East German Stasi secret police. By trying to preempt damaging revelations from just-opened Stasi files, Stolpe is taking a calculated risk which may end his hopes of becoming the first Easterner to lead united Germany.

Many of the Nobel prizes awarded in 2001 were awarded for work carried out in the 1970s and 1980s. However worthy the winners were, the authorities should perhaps have chosen recent groundbreaking research such as the work on the human genome.
