Not all that grand
Article Abstract:
Pakistani prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, faces opposition from business people over a sales tax, and has lost face following Pakistan's withdrawal from Kashmir. Pakistan also has serious economic problems. The opposition to Sharif is divided, and support for other parties has not increased as a result of a drop in support for Sharif. The president does not have the power to dismiss Sharif, and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League benefits from a strong parliamentary majority and two and a half years before elections are due.

Pakistan's new old rulers
Article Abstract:
A military coup has taken place in Pakistan, where Pervez Musharraf has become ruler, ousting Nawaz Sharif, former prime minister. He has not stated whether democracy is to be permitted again, nor when this might be. There were some celebrations following the departure of Sharif's government, due to Pakistan's economic problems and the control that the government had sought to exercise over institutions. The coup followed an attempt by Sharif to install his own men in the army.
