Article Abstract:
Canada has seen a drop in its performance as a provider of aid with no particular interest, and the proportion of aid given in relation to gross domestic product has dropped since 1991 to 1992. This is part of a general trend world wide, and because of Canada's efforts to control a budget deficit. Regional banks, the United Nations and the World Bank account for a third of aid from Canada. There have been calls for an increase in aid following a visit by citizens and politicians from Canada to Thailand and Indonesia, where they saw great poverty.

Storm clouds from Brazil
Article Abstract:
The Brazilian real has been allowed to devalue in relation to the US dollar, and this has had an impact on financial markets world wide. The Brazilian economy should benefit from the devaluation, but Brazil still has to tackle its fiscal deficit. The impact on international markets depends partly on investors' confidence in international policy makers such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Brazil's agreement with the IMF will have to be changed, and there should be a reassessment of currency policy.
