Finland: out of the woods?
Article Abstract:
Finland is now emerging from its severe recession of 1991-93, thanks to the austere economic policies implemented by successive governments. Finland has carried out, or is doing so, welfare spending cuts totalling some 50 billion Finnish markat, equal to some 10% of GDP. Such policies have stimulated economic growth, with the economy rising by 4.2% in 1995, and have given Finland Europe's lowest inflation rate. However, unemployment is now at the second highest level in Europe, at 17%.

Sweden: the world's barometer
Article Abstract:
Most of Sweden's major companies saw high profits and good export performance in 1995, helped by the weak krona, strong demand from important export markets and and corporate slimming. However earnings in 1996 will be undermined by the rise in the krona and reduced demand for exports. The country's global companies act as a good barometer of the world economy, and they include Astra and Electrolux, which have both warned that the stronger krona will affect profits.

Finland takes notice of its neighbours
Article Abstract:
Finland's economy has experienced a remarkable about-turn since the beginning of the 1990s when the economy decreased by 13%, and has shown steady growth since 1993. The nation looks set to be among the first to join the European monetary union in 1999. Finances have benefited from budget cuts and not tax increases, although unemployment has risen to 16%. It is forecast that Finland's economy will grow by some 4.5% in 1997.
