The assumption that Britain's economic recovery is being slowed by abnormally high interest rates caused by the European exchange-rate mechanism is not valid. Britain's rates are not much higher than those elsewhere, and lower rates would not necessarily produce growth anyway.

The Aug, 2001, interest rate cut by the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee reflects the Bank's gloomier expectations for UK economic growth. GDP growth is now expected to reach only around 2% in 2001.
