Article Abstract:
The Australian government is coming under growing pressure to increase the competitiveness of the country's financial market. However, problems have arisen because the government has no experience in the financial industry and because it is not prepared to invest large sums of money in this area. Some observers fear that Australia will not be able to establish itself as a competitive regional financial centre, especially as it faces growing competition from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Australia's tourism industry grew steadily during the 1980's, due in large part to a large increase in the number of Asian tourists visiting Australia. Travel by Asians is expected to continue to increase, since Asians find in Australia many opportunities for low-cost, outdoor-oriented travel.
