Nowt to sniff at
Article Abstract:
Artificial noses have a number of applications such as detecting land mines, medical diagnosis, and testing the quality of wines and beers. The potential market for artificial noses is estimated at $4 billion annually. Electrically conducting polymers are used for most artificial noses, but optical noses are also being developed at Tufts University, near Boston, by David Walt and John Kauer. California Institute of Technology's Nathan Lewis is, meanwhile, researching polymer noses using carbon black.
